My husband and I, fully formed adults in our 30s when we married, had spent the last few years traveling liberally. We were accustomed to breezing off to Asia and weathering jet lag and multi-leg flight routes with aplomb. I wondered how we'd manage these types of adventures with a child, never mind a toddler or primary-schooler.

So at five months pregnant – back when sleep deprivation and postnatal anxiety seemed like far-off conditions that only plagued other people – I hopped online, transferred thousands of credit card and Amex points, and booked a beach holiday for our future family of three, six months after my expected due date.
